I was conscripted into the army for two years in 1979 just after having been married.
I left for the military on a freezing cold winter morning on a troop train, seeing my new wife on the platform alone as the train pulled out.
I was sent north-west on a number of assignments and only wanted to come home.
Luckily, I came home unscathed. My wife was smiling when that happened.
