Kelly Winning & Burra McHughes – This River Of Gold (MP3)
$1.65
‘This River of Gold’ is a heartfelt collaboration between Kelly and former student, Murrawarri man Burra McHughes, sharing his story of the Barwon River at Brewarrina, home of the ancient fish traps (Ngunnhu), a place of profound cultural and spiritual significance for his people. The recording features the rich, unmistakable voice of Brewarrina elder Uncle Col Hardy, whose lifelong connection to the river brings authenticity and warmth to the song. Blues guitarist Buddy Knox who grew up on the river adds soulful electric guitar throughout, while the haunting sound of the traditional emu caller closes the track, echoing the timeless rhythms of the land. Kelly’s own connection to Brewarrina began long before writing this song. She first worked alongside Uncle Col as a zookeeper and educator at Taronga Zoo before being posted to Brewarrina as a teacher where her love for the people and their country deepened.
