Miguel Rios
The music of Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Miguel Rios draws from a deep well of
influences. From his unconventional, freewheeling Queensland childhood and mixed heritage from
The Americas to absorbing a classic folk-rock soundtrack of the 60s and 70s. His albums
Slaughterhouse Road (2021) and Running Blue (2024) deliver a captivating mix of intricate guitar
playing (think John Fahey and Leo Kottke), intriguing storytelling (Bob Dylan, Paul Kelly) and
evocative vocals (Leonard Cohen). Rios pays homage to the Earth and her keepers, setting the
mood – whether radiant or foreboding – through a sonic kaleidoscope of perspectives.
Miguel colours his songs with resonant imagery. Stories are cloaked in evocative references to
nature, humanity, and the mysteries of life. Gritty, intriguing, worldly and ethereal. Since moving to
bushland outside Melbourne, the effect of inherited memory may be at play in this creative
evolution. He has begun to feel a strong cultural connection with his Native American and Mexican
heritage.
“After seeing him sing…and listening to ‘Slaughterhouse Road’, Miguel is the most compelling
and interesting singer-songwriter I have seen in a long time.” (Kavisha Mazella)
