Peter ‘Smokie’ Dawson
Peter ‘Smokie’ Dawson is a singer / songwriter who, with his unique and traditional style of music, has been touring, recording and performing at various festivals and country shows across Australia.
A country boy at heart Peter has channelled his experiences through his song writing with the release of his first EP, ‘That’s What Country Boys Do’. This Album led him to his second release album, ‘All The Rivers In-Between’, he is extremely proud of these albums and has had the privilege of the very talented Phil Emanuel playing on one of his trucking songs.
Peter has been busy touring and performing at various festivals and events such as ‘The Lights On The Hill Memorial’ in Gatton, ‘The Slim Dusty memorial show’ in Kempsey and Music in the Mulga just to mention a few.
Peter has been recognised and awarded for his work such as the Slim Dusty memorial song awards in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 and the Stan Coster song writer award in 2015.
Peter completed his third album entitled, ‘The Reason’, which he recorded at Kross Cut Records with Lindsay Waddington. It was released in 2020 with great success winning The Stan Coster memorial award for songwriter with his song ‘Stanley & Slim’. He also was awarded the Harold Hec Davies award for services to Country music 2020 and most recently the ICMA award for most popular Traditional Independent Country Music Artist 2021. Most recently Peter won a Brumby Award for best collaboration of the year for 2022 with ‘Stock Routes of Australia’ and also co-wrote a song with young Amy Ryan who in Jan 2023 won CCMA jnr songwriter of the year for their collaboration, ‘As I Ride’.
His latest EP is a wonderful collection of original and collaborative works with writers such as Luke O’Shea and Allan Caswell. This EP, ‘Touching Strings’, has been described as his best yet, produced by Benji Pocock.
Peter has strong connections to Tamworth and his love of Country Music and this land is what inspires him to write.
